Macarthur Child Development Service
This service provides services to children with learning difficulties, preschool children at risk of learning difficulties and developmental delays, children with behavioural and emotional difficulties, and support to their families. The team comprises speech pathologists, a physiotherapist, a clinical psychologist, a community development worker, and registered nurses (at Beverley Park School), working with children and their families in Macarthur.

Who do we see?

  • Children with a mild delay in their development (0-5 years)
  • Children with speech and communication difficulties (3-12 years)
  • Children with language difficulties (3-12 years)
  • Children with learning difficulties (3-12 years)
  • Children with behaviour problems (0-12 years)
  • Children with motor and coordination problems (0-12 years)
  • Children with nursing needs who attend Beverley Park School
  • Children and adolescents in mainstream schools with physical disabilities (5-18 years)

What do we do?

  • We work with children and their families
  • We work as a team, and with people from other organisations (e.g. early education and school staff)
  • We try and prevent problems before they happen
  • We try to identify a problem early so it can be treated early
  • We offer centre based clinics and clinics in the community that are easy for people to get to (e.g. SPOT Chat Clinics)
  • We work insettings where children are having problems (e.g. school, preschool)
  • We offer advice (e.g. phone-in consultation service)
  • We provide helpful resources (e.g. Kidz Tips)
  • We offer inservices and workshops to parents, preschools, schools and interest groups on a variety of topics
  • We talk to the community about their problems and come up with better ways to provide our services
  • We offer a brokerage service to early childhood centres and schools

Projects and Programs

  • Early Childhood Outreach Services: This project has a focus on children (3-5 years) who have speech and communication difficulties, mild developmental delays, motor and coordination problems. Inservices and handouts are provided. Preschools in Macarthur can apply for this project annually.
  • Early Learning and Behaviour Project: This is a joint project between Health and Education. A clinical psychologist works with Itinerant Support Teachers (Learning and Behaviour) to help preschool children with severe behaviour problems with the transition from preschool to school.
  • Playing and Learning Together Program: This is a joint Health and Education program. A clinical psychologist works with Itinerant Support Teachers (Learning and Behaviour) to help Kindergarten children with severe behaviuor problems at school and at home. One school in Macarthur receives this program annually.
  • Teamwork Project in Schools: This is a school based project that provides a therapy service to children aged 5-12 years who have a language, motor and/or perceptual learning difficulty. A speech pathologist and occupational therapist provide assessments, intervention, consultation and training and development activities. Two schools in Campbelltown receive this project annually.
  • SPOT Chat Clinics: Spot Chat clinics offer a drop-in service for parents of children with speech and communication difficulties, mild developmental delays, motor and coordination problems, learning difficulties and bevaiour problems.   • Tharawal Project: This is a speech pathology service that is provided to children attending Ooranga Wandarrah Child Care Centre.
