The Amputee Association of Sydney Inc

This is a non-profit mutual support organisation for people who have lost (or who have congenitally absent) limbs. Our personal experience of the physical, mental and emotional adjustments needed after amputation allow us to offer hope to new amputees and their families.

We aim to promote, assist and carry out projects to benefit amputees. These projects include:
- educating the general public in the needs of amputees
- encouraging professional interest in amputees' needs and lifestyles
- researching and training in all things affecting amputees
- training and rehabilitating amputees through supportive services using skilled and informed personnel
- liaising with government departments and statutory agencies

AskAQA! has the information about access, benefits, contacts, education, employment, equipment, health, holiday accommodation living skills, recreation, respite care, support groups, vehicles and vocational training for people with severe physical disabilities.

The objective of AskAQA! is to enhance the quality of life of people with severe disabilities by:
- enabling them to make informed choices about services and products
- improving their opportunities to participate in education, training, employment and the general life of the community
- linking them with groups and individuals who can provide them with emotional support
- supporting their carers and advocates
- creating a more informed general public so that they will not be excluded from social and vocational activities because of negative attitudes or inaccessible environments
- ensuring that gaps in service for them can be quickly identified and acted on.

AskAQA! seeks to achieve these objectives by providing people with a severe physical disability, their families, carers, professionals and anyone who is interested with practical information about special purpose and generic services which is up-to-date, complete, accurate and free of charge using a computer database.

The privacy of callers to AskAQA! is guaranteed. No personal details will be shared with individuals outside AQA of with any other organisation.

Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association

The AOPA is the professional association of orthotists and prothetists in Australia. Activities include training, education, advocacy, clinical and technical research and development.

An orthosis is a brace or appliance fitted to the body to control biomechanical alignment, protect and support a healing injury, assist rehabilitation, reduce pain, increase mobility or increase independence. Commonly prescibed orthoses include those for the foot, ankle and knee, for fractures and the spine

A prosthesis is an appliance individually designed to restore the look and function of a lost limb as much as possible. They are used in congenital limb deficiency, or amputation due to trauma or disease.

Parent Line

A telephone counselling, information and referral service for parents of children aged 0 to 18 years, living in New South Wales.

Parent Line can assist with behaviour problems, emotional problems, discipline, adolescent issues, primary aged child issues, baby and toddler issues, family relationships, sole parent issues, school problems, child care, juvenile justice and child health and safety issues.
