Macarthur Aged Care Mental Health Service

Macarthur Aged Care Mental Health Service employs a staff specialist psychiatrist (Dr Claire Jones). Referrals should include relevant history of psychiatric, medical, personality or social problems, a current medication list, and a recent full organic screening including FBC/ESR, UECs, LFTs, Ca/Po4, BSL, TFTs, B12/folate, MSU and other tests as necessary. A CT scan of the brain is important if there is a history of neurological symptoms and signs.

Disruptive Behaviour
For children from 2 to 11 years
Behaviours include defiance, temper tantrums, restlessness, overactivity, irritability, acting without thinking, disobedience, aggressive behaviour, lying, stealing, swearing, destruction of property, cruelty to animals

Eating Disorders
Anorexia Nervosa is characterised by:
- refusal to maintain body weight above the minimum normal weight for their age and height
- intense fear of gaining weight or becoming "fat", despite being underweight
- distorted negative view of own weight size, or shape e.g. an odolescent may regard themselves as fat even when they are obviously underweight

Bulimia Nervosa is characterised by:
- repeated episodes of binge eating
- reports of lack of control over eating during these beinge-eating episodes
- attempts to compensate for binges and to avoid weight gain by self-induced vomiting
A person with bulimia is usually above average in weight for their height.

Physical effects are: loss/disruption of menstrual period, anaemia, reduced resistance to cols/infection, swelling of limbs, loss or thinning of head hair, growth of downy hair on arms and face, tooth decay, mouth and oesophageal ulcers resulting from corrosion by stoacm acid in people who vomit frequently, constant tiredness, sleep disturbance.

Psychological effects are: depressed mood, mood swings, poor concentration, irritibility, indecisiveness, withdrawal/social isolation, feelings of failure and helplessness

Treatment: is physical, sometimes in hospital, and psychological.

Psychosis and Schizophrenia is characterised by:
Confused thinking, delusions (of grandeur, persecution, guilt, paranoia), reduced or inappropriate emotional responses, social withdrawal, loss of energy and motivation, decline in performance at school, auditory or visual hallucinations.

Service includes assessment and diagnosis, psychotherapy, education, liaison with other agencies, psychiatric consultation, and advice on medication.

Anxiety management, Stress management for parents, Building self-esteem in children aged 6 to 12 years, depression prevention and treatment.

Macarthur Mental Health Service

MMHS provides a comprehensive range of integrated mental health services to the residents of Macarthur aged over 16 years. The staff consists of psychiatists, psychiatric registrars, registered nurses, social workers clinical psychologists, occupational therapists and mental health workers.

Illnesses treated include schizophrenia, manic depressive disorder, major depression, post and ante natal mood disorders, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, social phobia and eating disorders.

Post and Antenatal Mood Disorders Service

Services offered by PAAMS: Assessment, consultation, individual support, medication, group programs, referral and advice, education, case management and ongoing monitoring.

Admission criteria: Women aged 16 years and over, women who are pregnant or who have a child 0-12 months old, living in the Macarthur-Wollondilly area, currently experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression over the last two weeks, with a past history of post natal depression or depression/anxiety disorder.

Referrals: By antenatal clinics, hospitals, doctors, health professionals. Women will need to have a letter from their GP prior to assessment specifying that their pregnancy is being monitored.
Post natal referrals: also by self-referral, or by concerned family and friends.
