BreastScreen
The BreastScreen program is a national government funded, fully accredited service that
provides free breast cancer screening especially for women aged 50 to 69. Scientific
evidence demonstrates that women aged 50-69 years who have a regular breast screen every
two years may reduce their chance of dying from breast cancer by at least 30%.
BreastScreen Greater Western Sydney, the local BrestScreen service provider, was
established in 1992. Until October 2002, over 478,000 mammograms have been performed
through nine screening centres.
Our permanent screening centres are located at:
Campbelltown: Ground Floor, Specialist Medical Centre, 82 Queen St
Liverpool: Shop 42, Liverpool Plaza, Macquarie St Mall
Bowral: Bowral Hospital, Bowral St
and also at Parramatta, Blacktown and Bankstown. BreastScreen Greater Western Sydney
operates three mobile screening vans, which visit a number of different locations
throughout the year.
BreastScreen strongly supports the role of the GP in managing overall breast care for
their patients. At the time of screening, women are encouraged to nominate their GP to
receive a copy of results and any women diagnosed with breast cancer will be referred back
to their GP for ongoing management. GPs can play a very important role in reducing breast
cancer mortality rates by referring any eligible patients to have a regular screening
mammogram at their nearest BreastScreen centre.
Appointments are essential: phone 9843 3288 or 13 20 50.
Further information requests and comments can be namde to the Fiona Burgemeister,
Director, BreastScreen Greater Western Sydney, on 9843 3279.

Young Women Who Are Parents Program
Provides information and support to young mothers under 25 years living in Macarthur.
The average age for a sole parent is 33 years for women and 38 years for men. Only 2.8% of
all sole parents are young mothers under 20 years. Many young women who fall pregnant
while still at school feel they have to leave early. Even though the Dept of Education has
introduced a policy to prevent this, many young women still unwelcome or feel school is
now not relevant to them. Many young mothers find housing and transport difficult to
access. The lack of and high cost of childminding means access to training and employment
is harder. A greater number of young mothers experience domestic violence compared to
other age groups. Community perceptions about "teenage mothers" affect young
women's sense of dignity and self esteem.
Provides opportunities, choices and training for young women who are parents up to 25
years old. 11 week community education course runs twice yearly. Guest speakers, mutual
support, advocacy on young parents issues, free child care and transport. Referral to
consultancy groups, advocacy groups and social activities. Free child minding.
