Aboriginal Health Team
Aboriginal health workers work with the aboriginal community on a range of community
and health promotion projects. The aims of the team are to promote positive respectful
partnerships with key ATSI organisations and groups, other departments and community
organisations, to address priority issues and develop relevant programs (e.g. in family
and child health, and cardiovascular disease and diabetes), to improve access to Macarthur
services, and to develop the Macarthur ATSI team.
Current Projects
Aboriginal Home Visiting Program: supports antenatal and postnatal Aboriginal families
in Macarthur
Outreach Clinics: Out reach clinics operate an antenatal service, counselling,
dental and midwifery services at Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation and speech pathology
Safer Koori Kids in Macarthur: A branch of the Home Visiting Program concerning
child protection issues
Partnership Agreement: between Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation and Macarthur Health
Service
Cultural Awareness: A Cultural Awawreness course has been running since 1999, and
is now compulsory for all Macarthur Health Service staff
Men's Group: has been operating at Miller to discuss men's health and develop
community projects. Soon for Tharawal.
After School Project: Addresses diabetes and other health education within the
Macarthur Aboriginal community. A consortium between Diabetes Australia, Tharawal
Aboriginal Corporation, Macarthur Aboriginal Health Team and the Health Promotion Team. It
is a fun afternoon for school children. Activities include touch football, painting and
music based around eating nutritious food.

Programs
Women's Health: Conducted by a women's health nurse once a month: pap smears,
advice on contraception, menopause advice, breast screening. A female aboriginal worker is
on duty 5 days a week to provide support with women' issues.
Hearing Program: Screening tests are performed throughout the schools within the
area. A GP working with the service can refer to Australian Hearing Services or
specialists if needed.
Eye Health Program: An optometrist visits every second Wednesday to deal with
diabetic or general eye problems.
Paediatric Clinic: Held every second Thursday. Referral is necessary from the
Tharawal doctor. The service is free.
General Practitioners: A number of GPs attend Tharawal. Call the medical
receprionist for an appointment.
Diabetes Education: A diabetes nurse educator visits every wednesday. There are 2
health workers available 5 days a week for diabetes care. Medical care is available from
the doctors. Referral to a podiatrist is available.
Maternal Health Team: Available 5 days a week to assist women with pregnancy tests,
antenatal shared care with Campbelltown Hospital, pregnancy bookings and post-natal
checks.
Dental Service: Dental services are available. They include x-rays, fillings,
extractions, dentures, mouth guards and specialist referrals.
Sexual Health: A sexual health worker is available at Tharawal.
Alcohol and other Drugs: A worker in alcohol and other drugs is available.
ENT Specialist: Monthly visits by an ENT specialist from Westmead occur. Referral
by a Tharawal doctor or hearing Team member is necessary.
Immunisation Program: Immunisation is available through the doctor or nurse.
Antenatal Home Visiting Program: This service is available. A project officer is
available to support and work with pregnant women and children up to 2 years.
Other Services: Visits from Centrelink, the Department of Housing, the Chamber
Magistrate, and family counsellors occur on a regular basis.
